<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Babas and Nyonya </b>are <b>Chinese</b> of noble descendants that have adopted much of the<b> Malay culture</b> into theirs. They are also known as '<b>Straits-born Chinese</b>' or '<b>Peranakans'</b>. The public can now view the heirloom unique to this heritage at the <b>Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum</b> (a <b>private museum</b>) run by the <b>Babas and Nyonyas of Melaka</b>.
Located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, or better known as the Millionaire's Row, this heritage was a residence built during the Dutch occupancy and bought by the Peranakans in Melaka. The design of these houses clearly shows the mixture of culture between the east and the west. Built in <b>1896</b>, the Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum presents the way of life of the Peranakans in Melaka at the end of the 19th century.
Visitors can see the beauty and uniqueness of the Baba-Nyonya <b>traditional costume</b>, <b>antique furnitures</b> and <b>wood-work art</b>. The western influence can also be seen clearly from the antique furniture made in Italy, Britain and Dutch. Western influence did not end here as there are many more items in this museum, from Victorian-era chandelier to floor tiles, all has its own story to tell.
The Baba-Nyonya Heritage Museum is located at No 48 and 50. The museum assistant will give briefing during your visit and visitors are not allowed to take photos inside the museum.</span><br />

In 1511 a Portuguese fleet arrived under the command of
Alfonso de Albequerque. His forces attacked and successfully defeated the
armies of the native Sultanate. Moving quickly to consolidate his gains,
Albequerque had the fortress built around a natural hill near the sea. Albequerque
believed that Melaka would become an important port linking Portugal to the
spice trade from China. At his time other Portuguese were establishing outposts
in such places as Macau, China and Goa, India in order to create a string of
friendly ports for ships heading to China and returning home to Portugal.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major
towers. One was a four-story keep, while the others held an ammunition's
storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters. As the
plan below shows, most of the village clustered in town houses inside the
fortress walls. As Melaka's population expanded it outgrew the original fort
and extensions were added around 1586. The fort changed hands in 1641 when the
Dutch successfully drove the Portuguese out of Melaka. The Dutch renovated the
gate in 1670, which explains the logo "ANNO 1670" inscribed on the
gate's arch. Above the arch is a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India
Company.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The fortress changed hands again in the early 19th century
when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent it from falling into
the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France. The English were wary of
maintaining the fortification and ordered its destruction in 1806. The fort was
almost totally demolished but for the timely intervention of Sir Stanford
Raffles, the founder of Singapore, who happened to visit Melaka in 1810.
Because of his passion for history this small gate was spared destruction.<br />

<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Malacca rose from a humble fishing village
to become a major center of the spice trade forming a vital link between
the East and the West. Melaka (Malacca) is rich with history. In fact,
the earliest written records of the country made reference to the
Malacca Peninsula, instead of the Malay Peninsula or Malaya. Since it's
founding, circa 1400, by a fleeing Sumatra prince, Parameswara. The
journey which Parameswara made during his flight to escape the wrath of
the Emperor of Majapahit whom he had unsuccessfully tried to overthrown.
At the height of its power, the Sultanate of Malacca extended its
borders over the whole of peninsula to encompass Pantani in the North
and on the west right into the neighboring island of Sumatra to included
Aru, Rokan, Siak, Kampar and Inderagiri. This was during the mid-1400s.
The Golden Age of the Malacca Sultanate unfortunately lasted only for
less then a century.</span></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span>
</div>
<div align="justify" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">In 1511, the first of
many foreign invasions of Malacca took place when the Portuguese
arrived. The Portuguese were determined to control the East-West trade;
so Malacca still retained its importance as a trade center until 1641
when the Portuguese surrendered Malacca to the Dutch. The Dutch who had
a stronger foothold over the Indonesia archipelago swung the trade
center over to Sumatra. In the meantime, Malacca's trade also declined
due to the silting of its port. In 1795 Melaka (Malacca) was given to
the British to prevent it form falling to the hands of the French, where
the Netherlands was captured during the French Revolution. By the time
British took over in 1824, the focus of the trade has shifted from
Malacca to Singapore and Penang. Malacca however becomes the focal again
during the struggle for independence after the Japanese Occupation
during the Second World War and the British Colonial period that
followed. So when Malaya gained its independence, it was only fitting
that the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in Malacca, where it
all began. In 1989, Malacca has been declared as Malaysia's history
city.</span></div>

<b>Malaysia in Brief</b></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<b>Malaysia</b> is a federal constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia. It consists of thirteen states and three federal territories and has a total landmass of 329,847 square kilometers (127,350 sq mi) separated by the South China Sea into two similarly sized regions, Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo. Land borders are shared with Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei, and maritime borders exist with Singapore, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The capital city is <b>Kuala Lumpur</b>, while<b> Putrajaya</b>
is the seat of the federal government. In 2010 the population exceeded
27.5 million, with over 20 million living on the Peninsula.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Know Malaysia is to love Malaysia. A bubbling, bustling melting pot of races
and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live
together in peace and harmony.
</div>
<div class="desc" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Multiculturalism has not only made Malaysia a
gastronomical paradise, it has also made Malaysia home to hundreds of colorful festivals. It's no wonder that we love celebrating and
socialising. As a people, Malaysians are very laid back, warm and
friendly.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Geographically, Malaysia is as
diverse as its culture.Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 Federal
Territories, separated by the South China Sea with 11 states and 2
federal territories (<b>Kuala Lumpur</b> and <b>Putrajaya</b>) in Peninsular Malaysia
and two states and 1 federal territory (<b>Labuan</b>) in East Malaysia.</div>
<div class="desc" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
One
of Malaysia's key attractions is its extreme contrasts. Towering
skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five-star
hotels sit several meters away from ancient reefs.Cool hideaways are
found in the highlands that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich,
humid mangroves.</div>
<div class="desc" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
For the perfect holiday full of surprises, eclectic cultures and natural wonders, the time is now, the place is Malaysia.</div>
<div class="desc" style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
